Oak & Well - Your Care

What to expect on your first visit and all you need to know about scheduling your appointments and getting the care you need.

Your First Visit - What to Expect

Never had acupuncture before? No problem! Here are a few tips to get you started:

  • Call or schedule your first appointment online for our Port Townsend office.

  • Be sure to fill out your initial intake and consent forms online BEFORE you arrive at your first appointment. (This gives Sean time to review them prior to your treatment & we’re a paperless clinic.)
  • Wear comfortable and loose fitting clothing, if possible. If you’re in a private treatment room we have gowns and towels you can use if need be.
  • Feel free to remove metal jewelry or watches before your treatment.
  • Please refrain from wearing heavy perfume, cologne, or fragrances in the clinic since we do have patients with chemical sensitivities.
  • As long as COVID safety guidelines are still in effect, please bring a mask with you to wear in our healthcare facility. See our COVID-19 page to see how we’re safeguarding our community members and patients.

On your first visit:

  • Please plan to arrive promptly at your appointment time
  • Feel free to use the restroom when you arrive
  • Sean will greet you & take you to your treatment room
  • Your initial intake will take 30-45 minutes, followed by a treatment lasting 30-45 minutes. Please plan 90 minutes for your initial appointment.
  • At the end of your first visit, Sean will discuss with you the recommended treatment frequency & plan for your individual needs. You can then schedule your next visit(s) before leaving.
  • If you’re on the membership program we suggest scheduling out your next several weeks worth of visits.

During follow-up visits:

  •  You can arrive at your appointment time and Sean will bring you to your room. He will check in with how you’re doing & then you will receive your treatment.
  • Afterwards you can stroll on out, see if you need to book any future appointments, and then you’re on with your day.

How many acupuncture treatments are typically needed?

This varies by the severity, duration, and intensity of the condition, and overall health of the person. Here are a few scenarios:

    • Relief Care: 8-12 treatments/month
    • Corrective Care: 4-8 treatments/month
    • Wellness/Preventative Care: 1-2 treatments/month

It also depends if this is a new/acute condition, or a long-standing/chronic condition:

    • Acute conditions: Smaller number of treatments spaced closer together (ie. every day/every other day for 4-8 treatments)
    • Chronic conditions: Longer course of care with treatments initially spaced at 2x/wk and then tapering down to 1x/wk, every other week, etc. over 3-4 months.

Acupuncture is process, rather than a single event. Folks who respond well to acupuncture have generally made a commitment to a course of treatments over time.

What is Community-Supported Acupuncture (CSA)?

  • This offering is for a limited number of lower-cost treatments to under-served folks in our community.
  • We provide this honor-based system with a mission to expand access to rural healthcare in Jefferson county, help those from lower-income households or disadvantaged backgrounds, as well as raise awareness of the oppressive nature of a class-based capitalistic system.
  • Read more about this program HERE!
  • Booking a Community-Supported Acupuncture appointment is easy & simple!  Just give us a call and we’ll get you on the schedule.
  • Want to help support this program? Please give to our Pay It Forward Program! For those in our community with ample means, you can help support other community members receiving acupuncture by providing donations to help fund our Community-Supported Acupuncture program. We’re committed to offering a set number of appointments to those in need each week. When we are given external funds to support this effort, the number of appointments can grow to more accurately support the diverse persons living on these lands, while creating a more equitable healthcare model for all.

  • To make a donation in support of your community members, either email us at info@oakandwellacupuncture.com, call us at 360.474.3655, or simply chat with Sean in person the next time you’re in the clinic.
