Oak & Well - The Approach

Here are the tools of our craft and how we co-create healing. And all the nitty gritty on why (& how) we’re a cash-only practice for the people.

Yes, we're an old school, "cash-based" practice

(i.e. we don't accept insurance).

And here is why we don’t take insurance…

After accepting insurance in my clinical practice for a solid 6 years, I’ve seen first hand how insurance-based medicine is NOT in the best interest of the patient or the healthcare provider.

In an insurance model patients receive very limited access to acupuncture services, and when they do have benefits, they’re restricted by the number of visits they receive and modalities we can offer them. That, and the reimbursement rates for acupuncture continue to make it so that an acupuncturist has to see a far greater number of patients each day to make a living. This has the potential to compromise care, reduce the time we can spend with patients, limit our treatment approach, and burn out acupuncturists.

In a cash-based practice, you can instead have my full attention, receive access to affordable healthcare, and get individualized treatment as often as you need to.

We believe accessibility and inclusiveness are essential. We believe in rural healthcare for all people in the Port Townsend area. That’s why we offer 3 different options for investing in your healthcare.

Options for Everyone - Cost Breakdown*

(* If you're not sure what option is best for you, just give us a call & we can help guide you.)

$135 new patient fee

(+ $90 for each follow-up visit)

Option #1 – Pay As You Go

This is a good option for those who have the financial means to pay the full & “customary” rate for acupuncture services. These people will also perhaps only be coming in for monthly “maintenance” or for more of a short-term or acute condition. We do offer 5 or 10 treatment packages with a small discount.

Option #2 – Membership Model

If you have more longer-term care that is required, the Membership program could be a good fit. This allows you to pay a monthly fee, and then have unlimited treatments at a greatly reduced cost. Our intention with this payment option is to make it easier for you to commit to the care you need, and is best for those who require a minimum of 2-3 months of continued care with at least 1-2+ acupuncture visits per week.

Option #3 – Community-Supported Acupuncture (CSA)

This program allows us to offer a limited number of lower-cost treatments each week to under-served folks in our community. We are offering this honor-based system with a mission to expand access to rural healthcare in Jefferson county, help those from lower-income households or disadvantaged backgrounds, as well as raise awareness of the oppressive nature of a class-based capitalistic system. Read more about this program HERE. This option is for:

E

Wage earners in local food, retail industries, service workers, etc . This could include farmers, servers, grocery clerks, cooks, cashiers, baristas, and lots more.

E

People who may be self-employed (full or part-time) and are having a hard go of it (given the astronomical costs of private healthcare for those not employed by an institution)

E

Low-wage earners within a non-profit or similar mission-driven (rather than profit driven) organization.

E

Might be a single parent, or lack extended family support, or suffer from a physical and/or mental health condition that limits your ability to be employed, or some other circumstance that creates chronic financial hardship

E

Those experiencing the direct & dis-empowering effects of living within the capitalistic-patriarchical system or different social dimensions that are not allowing you to have the proper health support in life.

**Feel free to schedule a 15-minute FREE consult if you’re unsure as to which option may be best for you. Head’s up, we’ll also chat about this in your first visit with Sean.**

* A note on accessibility and inclusiveness in rural healthcare: If these fees are financially constraining or prohibitive for you, please do let us know and we can offer a financial hardship agreement to increase access to healthcare and traditional medical knowledge. We’re happy to work on meeting you where you’re at.

Tools of the Craft

Acupuncture Needles

Acupuncture is just one discipline under the much bigger umbrella of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It can help reduce inflammation, ease pain, improve mood, and restore blood circulation. Most people feel super relaxed after an acupuncture treatment.

Cupping & Gua Sha

As forms of manual therapy, cupping and gua sha (i.e. scraping technique) are two very old methods for restoring functionality to organs and tissues. They are both short procedures, lasting only 8-15 minutes, and can help folks rebound from injuries or physical trauma.

Shonishin & Tuina (Medical Massage)

Heavily used in pediatric care, Shonishin is a Japanese non-needle technique that can gently and safely improve a child’s health. We use little metal tools to softly re-balance a child’s system. Tuina (i.e. medical massage) can be used on children and adults and leaves people feeling refreshed.

Diet & Food Therapies

Food can be medicine or food can be poison. In Traditional Chinese Medicine we place great emphasis on what foods people put in their body. We can help folks explore the what, when, and how of eating to come back into harmony with their body, mind, & surroundings.

Herbal Medicine & Supplements

Herbal medicine has a rich and long history around the world. Pulling from deep wells of accumulated medical knowledge we can blend the best of eastern and western botanical medicine & nutrient-based supplements for both disease prevention and health promotion.

Qi Gong, Tai Chi, & Yoga

Therapeutic movement is very different than going to the gym or working with a personal trainer. Qi Gong, Tai Chi, and Yoga can be used to coordinate movement, breath, and concentration for more mindful living, improved strength and coordination, and healthier flexibility.
