Oak & Well - The Practice

Learn about what we do, and how we do it. (That, and why acupuncture and Traditional Medicine is so darn cool!)

What We Do & Services We Offer

Some people ask, “What do I see an acupuncturist for?”.

Good question! Essentially, you can see an acupuncturist for anything you would visit a primary care provider for. In fact, in several states throughout the US acupuncturists are considered primary healthcare providers (including in California, where Sean received his medical degree). If we need to refer you to another provider, we’re more than happy and equipped to do so.

Now, acupuncturists are most well-known these days for helping with acute or chronic pain. In the wake of the Opioid epidemic we see medical doctors referring to acupuncture more and more for pain relief. And it’s true, we’re really good at that!

However, at Oak & Well Acupuncture we also excel in pregnancy care, pediatrics, digestive issues, allergies, autoimmune conditions, and mental health challenges.

Small Town Meets Folk Medicine

Have you heard about the days of the small town doctor? The one who would serve a whole family over multiple generations. The one who would recommend honey, lemon, and hot water for a simple cough (rather than a pharmaceutical). The one who may even do a home visit if you need it. The one who you’d see out and about at the local grocery store. Yeah, that’s kind of like who we are at Oak & Well Acupuncture.

The only difference is that we’re pulling from a rich and deep history of traditional medical knowledge dating back nearly 2500 years (when the first written record of Chinese Medicine showed up on the scene in the Huang Di Nei Jing/Yellow Emperor’s Inner Classic.). Because of this, our tools and approach are a bit different than modern conventional medicine.

Although we can read imaging and interpret blood work, we may also take your pulse, look at your tongue, and palpate different regions of your body to help form a diagnosis. Even though we’re keenly interested in your symptoms, we may spend some time talking to you about your childhood, your family relationships, your work life, your hobbies and interests, and your hopes and fears because we really want to see and treat you as a whole person. And despite having “licensed acupuncturist” as our title, we can chat about nutrition, physical movement, herbs, meditation, nature prescriptions, and other lifestyle modifications too.

Either way, we work to uncover the story of how you got where you are now, in an effort to help you paint a more complete portrait of where you’d like to be. Stop on by our Port Townsend office and see what we’re talking about.

Our Ethics & Values

There are a few core tenets and values we hold at Oak & Well Acupuncture. They are:

Everyone is welcome here. Regardless of your age, sex, gender orientation, gender expression, sexual orientation, ethnicity, race, religion, body type, disability, or other uniqueness, you are safe here.

Accessibility matters. We are in a healthcare crisis and shortage, especially on the rural Olympic Peninsula. We’ll do our very best to meet you where you’re at and we strive to allow all those who would like to include acupuncture in their healthcare approach to do so.

Transparency builds trust. We aim to be up front about our expectations and limitations. From your very first visit through years of future care, we are an open book and invite conversation. If you have a question, ask. If you need to speak to us, call. If there is a concern or suggestion, please let us know. We’re here for you.

Health is a basic human right. All people should have the ability to receive the information, resources, and care they need to live full and complete lives. We believe in the human capacity to live long and live well as rooted in the Nourishing Life Tradition of Traditional Chinese Medicine. All while simultaneously recognizing that there is vast inequity in access to food, housing, clean water, land, medicine, and safety, and forces of systemic oppression continue to undermine the health and well-being of so many. We see our work as a small act of resistance against those systems, and in support of marginalized people in our community.

As an individual, you matter. I created Oak & Well Acupuncture in response to the brokenness of our current healthcare system. You will not fall through the cracks here. You will not be turned away for lack of ability to afford your care. Your unique self and expression is welcome in these rooms. You have a place to heal here, if that suits you. That, and I will always do my best to see, hear, and respect you, while working to dismantle my own biases. I hope this clinic provides you with: Sustenance. Shelter. Community.

Benefits of Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine

A Long & Rich History

This is some old school medicine. Dating back nearly 2500 years, the first written record of Chinese Medicine is found in the Huang Di Nei Jing (Yellow Emperor’s Inner Classic). Before that time, and as is the case with folk medicine around the world, healing traditions were passed down orally.

Can Promote Self-Healing

There is no magic or chemical on the end of an acupuncture needle. Instead, the techniques we use help you heal from the inside out. Our approach can soothe your central nervous system, ease inflammation, regulate your mood, and restore your innate ability to heal.

A Health-focused Model

Rather than emphasizing a disease-focused approach to healthcare as is found in conventional care, we instead value health promotion and disease prevention. We believe in nurturing and educating people to help them live long and live well.

Why Oak & Well Acupuncture?

What’s In The Name “Oak & Well”?

Here in the Pacific Northwest, on the unceeded territories of the Chimakum and S’Klallam people, it is a place of woodlands and waterways.  The very essence of where we work, rest, and live is shaped by the elemental forces of wood and water. These mountains, rivers, and forests are in an ongoing and dynamic relationship of these two opposing and complimentary forces.

Traditional Chinese Medicine has a way of seeing the world, and our place in it, as highly related and interdependent. The relics of a nature-inspired medicine rooted into a bio-region is more important now than perhaps ever before. Bridging the chasm of time, Oak & Well weaves together the traditional medical knowledge of those who have come before us with the place where are feet are now planted.

Descended from an Irish immigrant family, I am first-generation born in the US on my paternal line. Even with this displaced footing, my ancestral roots are steeped in the psyche and patterns of Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. In these rich “Celtic” traditions, the world too is viewed as living and animate. Trees are viewed as sacred in ceremony and ritual, and are the intermediary between earth and sky, the seen and the unseen. The wise old Oak tree in particular symbolizes longevity, grounding, and interdependence.

Meanwhile, the land offers the medicine when healing waters arise from bubbling springs. In Ireland alone there are over 3000 document healing wells (or holy wells) serving as meeting places, and sites of worship and prayer. Here, the water is the “cure of incurable illnesses” and each sacred well has its own blessings and gifts.

Bringing together healing, heritage, and place, Oak & Well is the culmination of my life’s work thus far. Here’s to the many steps ahead along this journey.
